Monrovia, Liberia – On Saturday, September 21, 2024, over 200 participants gathered at Invincible Park in Sinkor for Run4Peace 2024, an event commemorating International Peace Day and celebrating 21 years of peace in Liberia. Organized by the African Youth Fellowship Liberia (AYF), the event highlighted Liberia’s ongoing commitment to peace, youth empowerment, and justice.
A Message of Unity and Action
Moses N. Buwee, Founder of AYF Liberia, delivered an inspiring address, emphasizing the day’s theme, “Cultivating a Culture of Peace.” He celebrated Liberia’s 21 years of peace while underscoring the ongoing effort required to sustain it.
“Today, we gather not just to run or walk, but to send a powerful and unified message to our nation and the world: Liberia is steadfastly committed to peace, unity, and reconciliation,” Mr. Buwee said. “Every step we take signifies our commitment to sustaining peace and building a brighter future. Together, let us rise and build a future where peace and prosperity prevail.”
Mr. Buwee called for collective action to address Liberia’s pressing challenges, including youth unemployment, the rising cost of living, and the devastating impact of drug abuse on the nation’s youth. He revealed alarming statistics, noting that nearly 20% of Liberian youth are affected by drug abuse, and urged the government to invest in educational, job creation, and leadership development programs to secure a brighter future.
“Our young people need hope, not neglect. They need rehabilitation and education,” he emphasized.
Justice as a Foundation for Peace
The AYF leader reaffirmed his organization’s commitment to advocating for the establishment of a War Crimes Court, emphasizing the importance of accountability for sustainable peace.
“No sustainable peace can be achieved without justice. Justice is the bedrock upon which lasting peace is built,” he declared, urging Liberia’s political leaders to prioritize long-term stability over short-term political gains.

Acknowledging Peacebuilders and Partners
Mr. Buwee extended gratitude to notable peacebuilders, including Nobel Laureate Madam Leymah Gbowee and former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, as well as donors and international partners such as the EU Liberia, the US Embassy, and Sweden.
“Our sincere thanks also go out to our donors and international partners. Your support has been pivotal in making Liberia a better place,” he stated.
Inspiring Voices from the Event
Rev. Gerald B. Coleman, Head of the Advisory Board of the Universal Peace Federation Liberia Chapter, addressed the youth, urging them to embrace their critical role in shaping Liberia’s future.
“You are the next generation. We have failed—don’t fail Liberia,” Rev. Coleman said.
Ms. Korpu Sheriff, winner of the Run4Peace Excellence Award in the women’s category, encouraged Liberians to prioritize peace and fitness, particularly among women.
“Fitness is essential, and I’m not surprised to win today. I encourage my fellow women to make exercise a priority because it strengthens both body and mind,” she said.
Partnerships and Collaboration
The event was organized by AYF Liberia in partnership with the Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa/PeaceJam Liberia, Universal Peace Federation, and others, including the Fire Service Community Youth Initiative, Hot Peppers Newspaper, and Oracle Daily News.
A Movement for Peace
Despite the rain, Run4Peace 2024 united participants in a shared vision for a peaceful and prosperous Liberia. The event served as a powerful reminder of the nation’s journey toward sustained peace and the critical role of youth empowerment in achieving a brighter future.
