On this International Youth Day, AYF youth Magazine celebrates Ms. Kate Daminatu
Hunder, a trailblazing tech leader who is redefining what it means for women to thrive in
Liberia’s digital space.
Armed with a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (specializing in Software
Engineering) from BlueCrest University College, Liberia and currently pursuing her MBA
at the University of Liberia, Ms. Hunder is the Founder and Executive Director of Girls
Tech Club. Her flagship initiative, Liberian Girls in ICT, funded by Plan International
through the Youth Challenge Fund, is transforming lives by bridging the digital gender
divide and creating pathways for women in technology.
From introducing high school girls to real-world tech applications, to training female
university students in programming, technopreneurship, and data science, and
equipping women-led small business owners with essential digital and business tools,
Kate’s leadership is sparking confidence, skills, and innovation. Post-training results
show dramatic improvements, up to 80% skill growth, proving that access to technology
changes futures.
To date, she has mentored over 500 girls through coding bootcamps, digital literacy
programs, and mentorship sessions. Her work doesn’t stop at empowerment, it also
promotes peace, partnering with UN Women and UNFPA under the Youth Promotion
Initiative to train girls in running online peace campaigns for social cohesion and civic
responsibility.
Ms. Hunder’s driving philosophy “The sooner you understand that you’re living for
yourself, the sooner life begins to rise in your favor.”
Her advice to young changemakers is simple but powerful: Pay attention to what pricks
your heart, purpose often hides in discomfort.
From classrooms to community hubs, Ms. Kate Daminatu Hunder is proving that when
women lead in technology, communities grow stronger, peace grows deeper, and the
future grows brighter.
